I have a 55 gallon freswater tank and the water keeps turning a blue color it kinda looks like pool water? I have partial changed the water several times and it keeps turning blue I have even done a 75% change. I haven't changed there food or anything that I can figure that would cause this to happen. I can't seem to find anything on the internet about this either. The fish seem to be ok however one did die and it's eyes were all blood shot. Do you have any idea what could be causing this?

Hello!

Althogh I have never come across a situation like this, I can make some suggestions... do you use chlorine remover? Unless you use chlorine-free well water, you need to add chlorine remover. It may resemble pool water because pool water has chlorine, and unless you are using remover, yours might too.

If you are using chlorine remover, please feel free to e-mail me back giving me details about what kind of chemicals, food and plants you are putting in your water.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for your response yes I use a chlorine remover and have used the same one for the past couple years. It is Amquel instant water detoxifier it says it removes ammonia, chloramines, toxic pheromones and chlorine. The food I use is a color brightner flake that I have used for the last 7 years. I also use Cichlid Basic Floating Pellets and it's made by Ocean Nutrition. I use city water. I had fake plastic plants and some fabric ones. The first time I did a 75% change I removed the plants b/c I wasn't sure if maybe that's what was causing this....However after a couple of weeks the water is blue again.....It looks like blue food coloring has been dropped in the water. The only thing else that I can think of is to completey clean out everything and start fresh and buying distilled water from the store to refill it and then waiting to see if that also turns blue? anything that you can think of will be greatly appreciated b/c emptying the tank is alot of work! Thanks

Answer
I'm sorry, I have never seen or heard of a situation like this. All I can say is ask around at pet stores and to fish proffesionals. If you have never encountered a problem like this in the 7 years or such that you have had this tank, then think of anything you've changed or adapted recently.

Hope this helps, sorry I can not shed more light on the situation. Good-luck.
