Goldfish Problem

My daughters goldfish which she has had for three yrs has in the past three days developed a black coating on its body...what could cause this and what do I need to do...

Black coating... hmmm.. Never heard of such a thing! While goldfish do change color as they age its unusual for them to turn black.

One of the other reasons goldfish may get black on his body is due to 'ammonia burns' when the water is not changed enough. Ammonia of course comes from the fish's waste and can be very toxic and deadly -- especially in small tanks that haven't cycled.
