fish scales

my fish has scales near the back of his body that look like their cracking. I had another fish that this happened to but my plec attacked her and the wound got infected and she died from that so i dont know if the cracked scales are fatal if it even is.

Hi Alyssa;

If by "cracking" you mean to say that the scales are sticking out in one spot it may be an infection inside that is trying to break through the skin. Keep your tank very clean and separate the fish so the plecostomus can't get at it. You could also use medications but I don't know if it will be safe for your fish. I don't know what kind of fish it is or anything about your setup in order to help me determine that. If you could give me those details I can help you further.
