Question
Hi. My betta fish is just under 1 year old. He was a beautiful crowntail, but he got in a fight with one of my tetras and now most of his tail is no more. He is now in his own 2 gallon bowl. He is swimming around happily, but i was wondering how long it would take for his fins to grow back. It has been about 3 weeks since he lost his fins.

Answer
Tara,

As long as he has a piece of his tail at the base of the body, his tail should grow back. It can take up to 1 year but it most likely won't look the way it did when you got him. With him in the bowl with no heater it will take longer. Bowls are not good for any kind of fish. His fins are gone too? Or just the tail? Since he is in a small bowl you will have to do the water changes more often. 25% of the water removed and replaced with clean conditioned water every 3 days. Without the warm water it will take longer for them to grow back. Fin rot is almost 100% preventable with the right environment for the fish. The best thing for him is clean water.
