Question
Hi,
I have a 40 gallon community aquarium that I have been running for the last six months or so with no issues until last Thursday (four days ago) when I added a few more fish buddies.  Up until that point I only had three mollies, two tetras, and a sucker fish.  Last Thursday I added six guppies and two small (about the size of a quarter) angelfish.  The guppies constantly stayed at the top of the tank ever since I got them.  Then I began to notice it looked like they had been getting beat up.  Their pretty little tails have snags in them.
Last night I noticed one of my mollies had messed up lips.  Now this afternoon- two mollies have messed up lips and I have pulled one dead guppy from the tank. (three are currently MIA)
I've been keeping an eye on them and I don't see anything picking on the guppies- but the messed up lips makes me wonder if it's the mollies beating up on the guppies.
I just pulled the two guppies I could find and put them in a separate one gallon tank temporary.  Any suggestions on what could be wrong with the guppies?  Do you think it's the mollies picking on them?
Since I've put them in the smaller tank, they're still sticking to the top of the water...
All of the other fish seem fine.
Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Answer
Hi Casey:  I would suspect that if anyone is beating up the guppies it would be the angelfish.  Check in your filter for the missing guppies or what may be left of them.  The other fish may also be suffering from a mouth fungus and I would give the tank a dose or two of general cure or fungus cure.  Keep your eye on the angelfish as they can be very aggressive.  Feed the fish well but do not over feed them.  Treats of live or frozen brine shrimp and tubiflex worms will keep your fish healthy.   dave
