Question
QUESTION: so i have this white beta (male) and a green beta (female)e. they were in the same tank with a screen down the middle. i have just come to find that my green beta has passed away from old age. and i noticed that my white bata is turning red. on his face and down his tail around his eye and on his upper fin. i don't know if he is sick or if he is supposed to do that or if he is sad. he has never changed his color like this.

ANSWER: Hi Caitlin:  Have you changed their water??? or tested the water for high ammonia?  How old was the female?  What you have describe sounds to me more like a chemical issue then a disease but... If you have not already changed his water I would do so... and see if he perks up.  If he doesn't I would treat them with tetracycline.  get back to me please... dave

QUESTION: Dotty (female) was 3 and 3\4 years old. i had planned on her passing for several weeks. Plato is in a 6gallon Tank so it is difficult to change his water. how do i test for ammonia? and where can i find tetracycline? what does it do to my fish?

Answer
well there in lies the answer.  You need to get a gravel vacuum and siphon out part of his water.  His tank is probably very toxic if you have not changed any of his water.  You can take a sample of his water to the local fish store and they should test it for you for free. Take about a cup of water when you go.  You can also get tetracycline there.  It is an antibiotic that is dosed out for fish. It will help him if he has an infection.  Betta are prone to infections.  dave
