Question
My Radican swords still arn't looking good. I bought some fertilizer with iron in it but is it enough? It is called... Plant Grow iron enriched. It has 0.26% iron in it. It also has the 5 other micro nutrients needed in an aquarium.
I do need to get some iron enriched gravel though. I think that will help. I have not had the time to go to the pet store and get any. The nearest pet store is 30 minuites away.
If the gravel is iron enriched will the iron run out after awhile or will it last a long time? If I buy a fertilizer with iron how much should be in it or are you best off to but just strait chelted iron?
Thanks again,
Nicholas

Answer
For the radican sword, you'll need an iron supplement/fertilizer in the substrate. You don't necessarily need iron enriched gravel, just fertilizer tablets that you can press into the gravel. The amount of iron in a multi-nutrient supplement doesn't vary all that much...at least not enough to matter for this application. The iron in a tablet will eventually wear out, iron enriched gravels won't run out. If you go with a straight chelated liquid iron supplement keep in mind that you need to use a multi-nutrient fertilizer (such as Flourite liquid) along with it.
Even when you deliver the iron to the plant, it could take several weeks before you see any real improvement. The new leaves will be bright and green, and you should notice improved growth rates. The chlorotic leaves will never turn green again, you'll have to wait until the new leaves appear.
Good Luck!
