70 gallon aquarium set up

Question
I have an aquarium that was perfect for the first three weeks. I added fish (angels and gouramis mainly) and it is cloudy about after a week of adding the fish. I understand that this could be due to the bacteria forming, and my fish dont seem to be affected by the haze. The ones I can see anyway. But for as big of an aquarium this is, would it be beneficial to run two power filters on either side instead of one?

Answer
Hi Linda

Unfortunately, every tank, regardless of size, will become cloudy during the cycle process. It is unsightly to look at, but is harmless to the fish and will clear on its own over time. Water changes during this time are especially important. Change 10-15% of the water every few days. Also make sure not to add too many fish at once, as even a cycled tank will become cloudy from a bacteria bloom when more fish are added. Always make sure to keep an eye on your water parameters (ammonia/nitrate/nitrite) while your tank is cycling and when adding more fish.

To answer your question, absolutely yes it will benefit your tank and your fish to have 2 filters running on opposite ends of the tank. I use 2 filters in all of my tanks, doubling the amount of filtration and all of my tanks are crystal clear. In my larger tanks, I use a canister filter and 2 smaller hang-on-back filters.

I hope this is helpful to you, good luck!
