lockjaw in a oscar?

Question
Two days ago, my pet Oscar decided to try to eat one of the algae eaters, I am new to fish but, I know that they should not try this one! It was stuck in his mouth for a day until my husband and I finally broke down, caught him, then took it out. Now it seems that he can not shut his mouth. I am afraid his is going to die if I don't do something. Is there such a thing as lockjaw in fish? Please help! I don't want to lose my little buddy.

Answer
Oscar can go up to 2 weeks or longer without food.  There is a chance that his mouth has been hurt by the fish.  Offer food after a day or two (pellets or frozen food, never feed feeder fish), and if he eats then he is fine, regardless of how his mouth might look.  I recommend "Hikari gold" as far as pellets go. If he doesn't eat (being careful to remove uneaten food) give him a week.  If he is not better by then you'll have to weight your options.  You could take him to a vet, but that will cost more then the price of your Oscar.  At that point it will be up to you.  Keep a close eye on him to watch for secondary stress symptoms such as ich, fungus etc.  To stop this from happening again, I would remove the algae eater. I hope your Oscar gets better.
