freshwater anglefish

Question
Hello,
I just brought a freshwater angle home from the pet store. I didn't notice it there but now that it is in my tank (45 gallon) I see that it only has one of those fin type things that hang down where there are normally two. Sorry I don't know what those are called. It is a bigger size fish. I am wondering if this will grow back? Maybe another fish bit it off? Will it affect it's health? Thank you for your help.

Answer
Hi Elkim,

The two long, stringy 'feelers' are actually the Angelfish's ventral fins. Was it already gone when you bought it, or did it disappear after you bought it? If it happened after you bought it, you may have a fin-nippy fish in your aquarium, such as Serpae Tetras or Tiger barbs. All fish can be fin-nippy, it depends on the individual fish. Aggression can be reduced by completely rearranging the tank's decor and plants (but don't take out the water to do this)

Another possible cause is a sharp ornament or plastic plant. Plastic plants can cause scale damage and sometimes torn fins. Silk plants are a better alternative if you are going to be keeping artificial plants. Live plants are always much better.

The fin will grow back, provided that it does not get disturbed. Normally, damaged parts will be somewhat smaller than the original, but this is okay, and the fish adjusts to it's new size. Adding a slime coat enhancer such as Stress Coat will enhance and speed up the process.

The missing fin will not affect its health, but may cause some balance/minor swimming problems, so make sure it is not being harassed by other fish!

Good Luck, and Happy Fishkeeping!
