My dempsey seems sick he's flipping around sinks to bottom opens mouth really wide seems to be gasping for air is still eating

Poor guy. Sounds like swim bladder failure. It's very good that he still eating. This condition has many possible causes but just a few possible treatments. Here are links to information about it;
