Is My Black Moor Sick

Question
We have only had out fish for about a week. I would like to know if it is normal for it to spend most of it's time laying on the floor of the tank. It hardly moves except when you put food in the tank or tap on the glass.

Answer
Hello Kristine-

This isn't really normal behavior if it is happening all the time. Do you have a filter for the tank? Do you have a bubbler/airstone? Goldfish and Black Moors produce a lot of ammonia and require a lot of dissolved oxygen in their water - a good filter will fix both problems, but sometimes you may need an airstone/bubbler to get the extra oxygen. Other problems: the tank may be too cold or too hot (Black Moors enjoy mid to low 60's for their water temp.) or the Black Moor might be getting bullied by another fish. He may also be sick; check him over for any signs of illness (white spots, gray slime, red sores, etc.)

Hope this helps,
