QuestionWe have a single Betta fish that lives alone in a fish bowl. Receltnly we noticed that the tail fins appeared to have fallen off and we floating in the bowl.
The fish appears fine, but do you think lack of tail fins will affect the fish going forward.
Thank you
Elyssa
AnswerHello Elyhssa,
Usually, when a fish is falling apart, it's not a good sign. His water is probably dirty and he's probably got fin and tail rot. Check him for these symptoms:
-black, frayed fin edges
-black or brown coloration on the tail "stump"
-white tissue on the fish's body
If he's got these symptoms, empty out his bowl and give him fresh, clean water (not from your tap.) Add some Melafix (to promote re-growth of the tail) and Aquarium salt (to kill any infections.)
Usually a betta can wiggle around enough to survive, but it will take him a while to learn to swim without a tail.
Hope this is helpful.
