Black Fantail Disease

Question
HELP! EMERGENCY!
I have two fantails and two goldfish. I'm not a fish person but the kids love them and they are part of the family now. The black fantail has developed two large whitish grey patches around its middle and over its eyes. The others show no sign of infection. My tap water is from a natural spring and has been tested. The only thing in it was above normal levels of copper giving the water a bluish tinge possibly making it slightly acidic. I have had a filter installed to remove this. Do you think our fish has a chance of recovery?

Answer
Hello David-

Are the goldfish aggressive with the black fantail? If the goldfish have a V shaped tail, they may be biting the scales off of your fantails (with a Y shaped tail.) Other than that, I would recommend treating your tank for Ich. You can buy treatments at most pet stores, even WalMart should carry it. If you treat Ich, it probably will go away without taking your little guy with it.

Hope this was helpful!
