re-mouth fungus

Question
QUESTION: Lynda, i don't know if you remember me - i contacted you earlier this week for RAMON my betta fish that you have diagnosed with mouth fungus.

i followed your directions with antibiotics and salt, in a larger bowl. i followed the directions for erythromycin, which i am giving with aquarium salt. i started the treatment on wednesday and he is doing much better now, eating well, swimming with energy, and pooping "properly". i took away plants and pebbles till he gets completely recovered.
the white stuff outsie his mouth seems to have gone away, but their seems to be some left in the inside of his mouth. will it never go away? should i keep going with the antibiotics? for how long? thanks a lot for your help.
note- i also speak french if it is easier for you.

ANSWER: Hi AT,
Change all the water again, and continue the treatment.  Sometimes fungus can take up to  10 days to cure.  Continue the treatment for another 5 days.  He must be rid of this completely or it will continue to eat at him.
If you are keeping him in the same bowl you had him in, please do not put that plant back in with him.  You will have to change his water twice a week, and the plant is taking up too much space, space that the betta badly needs.  He would be better with a small, very small silk plant that you can find at the Pet Store for a small sum.  They like to rest on the leaves.   When you say pebbles, do you mean shells?  Shells will make your water very alkaline.  Bettas are not hard to keep, but high alkaline water is not good for him.  Coated rocks are better to use with the Betta.
I'm happy to know that most of this fungus is gone, and I hope he will be all better soon.
Lynda

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: Lynda, i hope you had a nice weekend. i'm emailing a followup on my betta fish ramon who had had mouth fungus for two weeks now almost. his situation seems to be stable but the white stuff keeps growing and falling off in the water. should we increase the dose of erythromycin? should we change the water more often [now every 5 days following the treatment instructions]. should i get him a small airpump to help? also some websites said we should stop feeding him for a while. thanks so much for your help. note: he is now in a 3 gallons naked glass bowl.

Answer
Hi AT,
I remember Ramon, and was hoping he would be all better by now.  Never overdose a fish, it would do him more harm than good.
Change all the water every three days using a good water conditioner, and continue treatment.  An air stone would help.   Make sure your antibiotics are not outdated.  Add 1 teaspoon of diluted aquarium salt to his water.
Don't stop feeding him, he needs good food to keep him strong.  If you don't feed him, he will become weak, and weak fish have trouble getting better, in some cases they die.
I hope the little guy pulls through soon.
