Black Moor
Hi Jaymie,
4 days ago in the morning I found my Black Moor on the bottom of the tank with his tail half gone. I have a 30 gallon tank and three goldfish, a Black Moor, Fantail and an Oranda. The Fantail and Oranda are ok but the Black Moor have a tail rot. I was using Maracyn Two for 2 days but didn't notice any results that's why I change it to E.M Erythromycin. Furthermore the Black Moor cant swim or eat therefore I am feeding him by giving him food on his mouth. He have gain some weight but he is still under his regular weight. I got the Black Moor and the Fantail 4 years ago and they have grown a lot, this year I bought the Oranda which is half the size of the other ones. As you can see in the images the first one is how he is now and the second one how he was. I would like to know if the medicine I am using is ok or what should I do? Also do you know how long would it take for his tail to grow back? I will really appreciate your respond.

Sincerely,
Claudia

Answer
Claudia,
No medication is a miracle drug that works over night. Just like us, the medication has to have a chance to work. Maracyn and Maracyn 2 are very good medications that work best if used together. It took some time for your fish to get this way, it will take time to get him healthy again. Your tank is too small for the 3 goldfish so make sure you are doing your water changes as least once a week. Fin rot is 100% preventable by doing the weekly water changes, and making sure the fish are in the right size home with a filter that is working properly. It's tail should grow back, but it will take time. Make sure you remove the carbon from the filter or it will pull the medication out before it gets a chance to work.
