Cloudiness in bow.

Question
I have had two Betta fish in separate good size bowls for about 6 months. In the last two weeks their water gets very cloudy within days of changing their water. I have used the same water treatment for six months..nothing has changed except the water gets very cloudy in about 2-3days.I took out the decorative plants etc.thinking that they were the cause but it didn't help. I have always let the water sit for a few days before I put it in their tank so I don't think it is a change in the tap water and I always use Aqua Plus tap water conditioner. I know that Betta fish don't live that long..do they have a disease that is causing this?

Answer
Hi Donna;

Have you changed their food or how much you feed them? Some foods cause this and overfeeding certainly will. Or, is anyone else feeding the fish without your knowledge?

Diseases don't really cause water quality issues. Adding medication to treat them does but it doesn't sound like you have used any. It is possible your tap water has changed a bit. I've seen that happen from time to time.

If the temperature in your house has become cooler recently it will reduce their appetites and cause cloudiness from food not being digested properly. They might be leaving food that decays in the tank too. Cloudiness is the result of that too. Keep their tanks in as warm a place as possible to help them out. The water should be at least 75 degrees all the time.

Bettas live to be about 2 years old. Some live as long as 3 or 4. A few even live up to 5. They are almost a year old when we buy them in stores, so yours should have several good months left.

Followups welcome
