Question
Hello Megan, i hope you will be enjoying healthy life :-) Kindly guide me how can I save my Zebra Finches and their chicks from cold ? Chicks dies when they come out from nests while I am providing them millats feeds, boiled egg , grit, powder of egg shells and even cod liver oil.

And kindly advice me the best way to take maximum benefit from Zebra Finches as some experienced persons say they are getting 100 chicks from 20 pairs in one clutch while my result is 25 chicks from 30 pairs in one clutch. Thanks in advance Megan :-)

Answer
Well, for the cold part, that is easily remedied by using a heater found in the reptile section of the pet store and keeping the cage no lower that 26C. This will also boost their immune system and help lower their stress. Just make sure the parents are still feeding the babies after they have left the nest.
As for how to maximize chicks, I'm afraid I can't help you. I don't breed my finches. If they have babies, it's because they've chosen to; all I do is make sure the babies don't die after they hatch. The only advice I can offer is make sure the cage is in a quiet, stress-free spot with no drafts and that plenty of calcium is available to the hens (I personally use calcium supplements added to the water every three days). Cuttle bone and egg shells are fine but for laying hens, they need more than just that. Wind eggs are lethal
