Mallard duck

Question
Hello,
I have a female
mallard duck that
was very healthy and
going good. until one
day I noticed she had
a large lump on the side
of her face. It looks like
she puffed up one of her
cheeks and left it that way.
I thought maybe it could be
a bee sting as near the Mallard
pond there are flowers blooming
which attract lots of bees every
year. She acts normal and healthy
non-the-less. No weird signs of
being sick. It has remained the
same size and shape for about a
whole week. Do you have any idea
on what this might be?
Thank you.
Susan.
Ps: by the way she has a nest
with eggs in it. She is a very
healthy duck.

Answer
Hi,

It is a great possibility that a bee may have stung her. It should heal on its own and if she hasn't shown any sign of sickness she'll probably heal herself. If the swelling doesn't go down and she starts to become weaker she may have an infection. You may want to lance the sweeling and drain it if this occurs and treat with a topical antibiotic cream.(you can get this at any human drugstore)

Hope this helps!

Amanda
