Question
My budgie's leg keeps sliding off his perch. It's like he hasn't got any grip on it. It's getting worse we have seeked help off a vet and a family friend who breeds budgie's but both have said there is nothing wrong but there quite clearly is.We really don't know what to do could you please help.

Answer
Hi,

I am sorry to hear your budgie is having difficulties. His leg may be ok to look at, but clearly he is having problems.

I am unsure how old your budgie is or exactly how difficult he is finding things, but here are thoughts that may help.

Firstly, some birds as they get older can develop arthritis in their legs or one leg. This could be due to a number of factors, but most commonly it is because the bird hasn't had enough variation in in foot movement. By this I mean that the perches that come with the cages bought in shops, are usually all one thickness. If this is the case, the feet don't get enough exercise and the feet get used to being in the same position all the time. There are 2 things you can do to help this, but unfortunately, it won't go completely if he has arthritis. Replace your perches with natural perches that you can usually get from a good pet shop. This will give him the exercise. Also, add some palm oil into his food and Glucosamine, or some other dietary supplement that is known to help ease arthritis and joint pain.

The other alternative could be some injury that he has done to his leg. If he is not holding it up and it appears to be getting worse, then try my other suggestions above.

My personal opinion is that it may be worth finding an avian vet. Your regular vets, although highly qualified, are often only competent in general bird stuff. Something more specific, like feet, really is a bit more specialised.

I hope this helps.Keep me posted.
