lovebird just laid egg -help

Question
Hi, I inherited my son's 2 birds. One is a peach-faced lovebird that I was told was a male and the other is a blue ring-neck parakeet that I was also told was a male. They were both purchased 2 years ago and seem happy and healthy. I am disabled with MS, so they spend the days free in my room during the day, and are very sociable. Yesterday I discovered an egg in the Kleenex box I had given to the lovebird to stuff paper in a week or so ago. He loves to rip paper up. The blue is feeding him more than usual and being very sweet to him. Could this egg be fertilized ? If not, should I remove it ? Any information would help. Thanks.

Answer
Hi, Lori.  Thanks for posting!

Lovebirds and Ringneck keets are too different genetically for a viable mating.  The egg just laid is infertile.  A female bird can lay infertile eggs when her hormones are running rampant during breeding season.  I'm sure this is what has happened, especially with the Kleenex box in the cage (bird is using as a breeding box/nest).  You should just leave this egg and any others that will be laid right where she has laid them and let her abandon them when she is ready.  If you remove any egg(s), she will continue to lay and lay and lay infertile eggs.  Let her treat these as they were fertile and she'll abandon them in about 4-6 weeks (maybe sooner).
