How do I handle this???

Question
Hi

A friend will give me a 3 and a half weeks old lovebird. (By the time I pick him up he will be 4 weeks)

The baby has NEVER been fed by any human, just by his birth mom. I will have to take him from his mom at this age and hand feed him myself. (It is either that or they will put him to sleep - I know, that's why I'm taking him with me)

My question is: How do I handle this situation without causing him any harm? I hand fed birds before, but not taken away in such an old age. I want this lovebird to be tame and have no traumas. Again, I would love to know the proper way to do that

Thank you

Scheila

Answer
Scheila,

A 4 week old lovebird is very close to being weaned.  That makes it much harder to feed.

You might want to read this article, which is full of great tips on weaning your babies.
