Wild or Domestic?

Question

Pretty Birds
There are these three birds in my front yard that look like big finches or some kind of domestic pet.  They all have similar coloring and I was wondering what they are.  Also, if they are domestic animals, is there a way to capture them?  I'm worried that they'll die in the wild.

Thanks.

Answer
Hi, Thomas.

Where do you live (city and state in the USA)?  Are you new to your area (as in you've never seen this type of bird before in the area where you live?)?  I've been overseas where birds that look like this are native and live in the wild and there are places where domestic birds have escaped or their humans have let them loose and they have acclimated to living in the wild.  A good example of this is the Monk or Quaker parakeet in the USA.

Some of their coloration of the birds in your photos resemble a type of conure (parrot), but it's difficult to see their beaks in these photos in order to tell if they have hooked beaks. Sun and Jenday conures are brightly orange and yellowed colored like these, but they don't have black wing feathers (as adults).  However, these birds might be a cross between 2 related species (a wild type and a domestic type that were released/escaped to the wild).  Could also be a newly introduced species to your area.

Someone very experienced in dealing with aves (expert knowledge of their behavior) MIGHT be able to capture them, but if they are doing fine in the wild, I'd let them be (unless they are destructive, sick, etc.).  It's very difficult to capture aves in the wild, unless they are sick, injured or malnourished and just can't fly any more.
