QUESTION: Our Cockatiel has developed a discoloration on his beak. He likes to bang on hard surfaces, but it looks like play behavior. Appetite and mood are normal, but we are wondering whether something is bothering him hence the banging.

ANSWER: Beak Banging is common in young male birds. I also have an Indian Ringneck who beaks bangs the cage bars and ME when he is out on me. He is claiming the territory. i would seperate the 2 and have seperate cages. the beak banging may diminish.
If the discoloration continues or spreads I would have a vet check him out.

Please Note: Diet can also have a drastic influence on our birds behavior. I recommend a very well balanced diet of a premium dry food with pellet (little or NO sunflower seeds) , fresh fruits and veggies offered 2 or more times a day (take them out after 2 hours) and fresh water. Please investigate diet.

QUESTION: Thank you for your answer. Do you have any suggestions as to the discoloration on the beak? It was my primary concern, not the banging.

Answer
It is most likely a bruise. A Birds beak also has small veins like inside, sort of like a dogs nails. I would assume that this is a bruise. This will grow out but never disappear on its own. The bruised area will grow out. It may be permanent until then. Good luck and I hope he is doing well.
