sick cockatiel

Question
Hi.  My Cockatiel Cleo is over 10 years old.  She has a huge swollen abdomen and her bowel movements are extremely runny, area a white mixture and have a strong odor. She does not appear to be sick otherwise, she is relatively active, maybe sleeping just a little more than usual. During the course of the day she might sleep on one leg on her perch, or she may go into her little room I have fixed for her off of her cage and sit on the floor and sleep.  She has been doing this for years, so her routine has not changed.  She has a poor diet, she only eats seeds, I've tried fruits and vegetables but have not been successful.  She prefers seeds.

Answer
Hello,
Well runny poops, and a swollen abdomen is not a good sign at all. Because of this you might have to take her to a vet. Probably because of her poor diet is what's causing this. As for now I would take her to a vet as soon as possible. Also keeping in mind to start giving her other foods than seeds.

If you read that whole site above, and still nothing has improved, you might want to try something a little more extreme. Make sure her cage is clean, with ONLY fresh water. Wait maybe 30-60 minutes, & your cockatiel will start to get a bit hungry. Put a slice of american cheese, or some iceberg lettuce in her normal food bowl after its been out of the cage for a while. If she's hungry enough, she will eat the food. The only reason I mention cheese or iceberg lettuce is because, cockatiels when first trying new foods, prefer dry foods. Cheese and iceberg lettuce is what I first would feed my cockatiels to ween them onto new foods. A cockatiel should have fresh seeds and fresh veggies/fruit just about everyday. Try doing what I wrote above, and see if that works out.

Hope this helps,
Carly
