taking parakeets to vet

Question
i need to take my parakeets to the vet to have their toenails clipped.  for example, when i moved i put them in the car.  one of them was very afraid of the car ride.  i don't know how to make this easier.  i also have a cage with a lock on it.  i prefer to bring them in that, but i don't think they will go in there.  besides, i would have to grab them and put them in the cage, of which i hesitate to do.

Answer
Hello Millie and thank you for your question.
It is stressful for parakeets to be moved, and especially in a car.  I have a parakeet that was a rescue, and she is the same way (her mate, who was also a rescue, loves to ride in the car).  If you have a small cage that you can use for travel for the parakeets, that is advisable to use it, but make sure that there are no perches or grates at the bottom.  Their little feet can get stuck in the grates, and they could end up with broken bones.  Removing the perches helps in two ways.  First, your birds will flap around in the cage, so having a perch could break a wing or other bone while the bird is flapping around.  It also makes it easier to catch the bird(s) at the vet's office.  Make sure that you put a cover over the cage until the vet is ready to see them.  This will help in easing some of the stress, as the bird is not watching thing go past it while it is in the car.

I hope this helps.

Good luck and God Bless.
