Fighting

Question
I have two parakeets, one male and one female. They have lived together for four years and have generally been pals. Recently, though, they have been fighting more and more. Just the other day, the male was injured fairly badly. I have tried separating them in cages located right next to each other, but they then spend all day calling to each other and will not stop until they are both in the same cage, where the whole cycle begins again. Any advice?

Hello Sara,

I believe it is a dominance battle. They are trying to show the other who owns the cage, yet when separated they are sad. My cockatiels have been doing this lately, but I know they still love each other, and don't mean any serious harm. It is all normal in my opinion.
