male or female lutino cockatiel?

Question
hey Cynthia Kiesewettter..
so i hear that you are really an EXPERT. lol! haha
well i got a question on my pet cockatiel,
Well, long story short, my friend had a MALE* lutino cockatiel, she was allergic to it, told my brother if he wanted, he asked me, i accepted, muahahha.
that night i got HIM* i started researching on cockatiels. i found out that it was a LUTINO. The next day i held it up in the light, i seen its tail feathers having YElloW barring then i lifted up its wings... it also had barrings.
what i read on the net was that females have barrings. and whenever i pressed gently down on its back and touch its tail... it shrills and poses for sex? mate? watever you wanna call it, lol!

so i have no clue rite now and im really stressed because im plannin on getting a male lutino tommorow.

btw, its quiet, behaves like a female, dont whistle, nibbles, bites, peeps whenever it sees me or i leave.

FEMALE OR MALE?

my guess is FEMALE.
can you help me Cynthia... reply asap because im getting another one tommorow. thanks

Answer
Hi, Dou,

I'd say your guess is right.

My biggest question with this whole situation is:  why did your friend think this cockatiel was a male?  Was she sold it by some pet store or breeder that really didn't know what was up?  Because 75% of the Lutino cockatiels out there are female, and you have no way of knowing if a baby Lutino is a male without a blood(DNA) sexing.  There is a way to know if it is NOT a male, through genetics, but if you can produce a male from a pair, you can also produce females.

Good luck,

Cindy (and yes, I'm an "EXPERT"!)
