QuestionQUESTION: hi,
I have a female cockatiel n i have it for the past six months. It is single n does not have a male. In december 2 mths back it laid an egg . The eggshell was very soft n so we threw it away she did not lay a second egg after that.
But on feb 3rd she again laid an egg, n another egg after 48 hrs . She has been laying eggs after every 48 to 55 hrs(like every alternate day). She has given 6 eggs till now and she is sitting on them.
I have had pigeons n few of them had died while laying eggs n im afraid if she continues to lay eggs she will fall sick. I read that a cockatiel lays about 4 to 6 eggs. what do i do to stop her from laying more eggs. should i let her sit on the eggs or remove them . Will she stop laying eggs if i remove the eggs of should i let them be. This time her eggs are not soft n she is eating well but she is panting and breathing heavily for a few minutes after laying eggs. will it harm her health if she lays more than six eggs? please advice.
thank you,
naqshpa.
ANSWER: Hello,
I would contact a vet about this, but your doves probably died because they were not getting enough calcium.
This is why your cockatiel's egg shells are so soft, not enough calcium. Your cockatiel may have the same fate.
Try putting a small amount of cow's milk, or soymilk in her water every other day, just make sure she gets sip of it a day, and you give her cheese and veggies.
Hope this helps,
Carly

QUESTION: hi thanks for the advice. but this time my cockatiel's egg are not soft they are hard only. the eggshell was soft the first time she laid an egg . i want to know if i should let her sit on the eggs or remove them so that she stops laying more eggs. which would be better? i would also like to know if it is normal for cockatiels to lay more than 6 eggs. n she has a cuttle bone in her cage so do i need to give her more calcium suppliments.
thank you
AnswerHello again,
I would actually contact an avian vet about this. With my doves, they just lay 2 eggs every month or so..but cockatiels will just keep laying. Try contacting a vet and ask them your questions. They may know better than I do. ;)
Good luck!
