my parakeet has lost her best friend

Question
i used to have two parakeets, one male and one female who were best friends and kept each other company, but recently, the male was killed by some kind of animal (we dont know what) while he was in his cage. When we looked in the cage, he was lying there, bloody, and the female parakeet was just standing beside him. She was unharmed, but now all she does is stand in the same corner of her cage everyday, only moving to eat a few seeds or sip some water. Is she depressed or traumatized? should we get her a new mate? how do parakeets usually react to these kinds of situations?

Answer
Hello Christine,

I am very sorry about your parakeet that died. My first concern is for the health of your female. I recommend that you take her to your avian veterinarian to make sure she was not also injured in some way.

Otherwise, parrots are very adaptable. Getting another bird should only be done if you are ready and able to provide the care that the additional bird needs. Your budgie will adapt to life with just her human flock, or to a new bird.
