Budgie and distructive behaviour-I think !

Question
Hi !,I have a male budgie just over 6 years old.He has been with me for nearly two years.Ovet the last three weeks he has started to peck and destroy-not sure if he is actually eating it-his plastic/rubber perches. There are two of them and one wooden one.I kept the plastic one as i knew that perches are better if they are a mixture of sizes.I have covered them with perch covers (hardboard and grit)and now he is pecking at them !.His cage is always left open for him to fly around and isn't clutterd with toys-which are swopped around regularly. He gets fresh water-with vitamins added-and seed every day, although he doesn't get fresh food often,he doues like carrot and apple !.He is playful still and talking-very loudly at the moment-and doesn't appear ill.If this is boredom, then what can I do to help him.He has one mirrow in the cage-which he guards with his life !-and I have been thinking of adding anopther but would that confuse him ?(!).When i thought my question out it didn't seem to be this long so apologies for the long missive !.Many thanks Debs

Answer
Debra,

Your question is short in comparison with some others I've recieved! Some parakeets like to destruct, I'm not sure what the reason for this is. I have a female who sometimes behaves this way, she has almost chewed her wooden perch in half. It sounds like your budgie is really well taken care of and has lots of things to entertain him so I don't think boredom is the problem. If he's acting normally I wouldn't worry about him at all.

My budgies usually have two or three mirrors in the cage during the day and it doesn't seem to confuse them so if you want to add another mirror I think he would enjoy it. You might want to invest in some more wood toys, it will give him something else to chew on and maybe he'll leave the perches alone! I've seen wooden swings and ladders. Also, you can sometimes find rubber bird chew toys that he might like. I hope I was able to help, if you have any follow-ups I will be glad to try and help.
