Question
I recently found a Cockatiel walking around in the apartment complex where i live in... I already had a female Lutino cockatiel, so adding another one wouldnt prove to be a problem... Some things i noticed about this male that i found that were interesting: First off, he always walks around really funny... Like he is strutting around, its really funny... He always has his wings open in a semi open state while he is prancing around(like showing off)... Second, sometimes he makes this kinda purring noise that i have never heard from my other tiel... Third, he always pecks his beak (kinda banging) on the cage bars whenever i am around... Like a woodpecker... And 4thly and most distressing, is that he always tried to hump my hand when he gets on my fingers... I know for him im probably his mate or what-not, but what can i do to discourage the behavior? He is a cute bird, and i love him to death, but thats not acceptable to me i guess... Thanks for your help...

Answer
Hello Paul.  Thank you for your post and cute story about your new found friend.
When he has his wings slightly away from his body, he is showing off for his mate, and that is you.
The banging of his beak is kind of a mating call..he's calling for you to come and mate with him, the same goes for the purring sound that he is making.
Unfortunately there is really nothing that you can do to discourage him from trying to mate with your hand.  His sex drive is in full swing, and he's letting you know it.
Hopefully he will turn to your female for a mate.

Please let me know how it's going.  He sounds like he's really cute.

Good luck and God Bless.
