Question
I can't get in touch with a vet. Can a bird go on sleeping for over a week and then just recover? I am nervous and can't find medical care for him?

-----Question-----Hello not sure if my other post went through to you. Thanks for your quick repsonse. I appreciate it.
My bird eats a high vitamin bird seed along with vitamins for his water. Is that okay? Also he is eating which I am happy about. His behavior is different now though. He eats from the floor on the cage vs in his feeder which is also on the bottom of the cage. Can a bird usually recover on its own vs. seeking medical care? Thanks for your help.

Me again, Shari.  I just read your comments in the nice rating your posted (thanks!).

Vitamins in water are also not good.  In the first place, placing them in water waters the vitamins down too much for them to be effective.  Secondly, anything added to the water can result in bacterial growth...the bird drinks the bacteria water and gets sick.

When I stated a bird can get sick from an all-seed diet, I didn't mean to confuse you.  What this means is that the high fat, low nutritional value of seed results in your bird not getting the proper nutrition it requires.  Also, keets are prone to fatty liver syndrome from eating too much seed.  This means your bird can develop a lot of fat on it's body and around it's major organs.  The fat causes problems in the body and with the organs resulting in sick birds.  They can also develop tumors, etc., as a result.  This is why it's so very important for parrots (your keet is a parrot) to have a lot of variety in their diet so they get all the nutrition they need to be healthy.  I'm saying your keet might be suffering from illness as a result of all these things I've mentioned to you.

Hi again, Shari.

No, it is not OK!  Seed is seed...it doesn't matter how many vitamins/minerals are in the seed.  For a keet, seed should only be about 25% of their daily diet.  The rest of the diet should be pelleted food and a variety of other healthy foods.  Visit my website for more information on this very important aspect of caring for a bird:

Eating from the cage bottom isn't good either.  In fact, you should place feed and water dishes (if not on a water bottle) higher in the cage so the bird doesn't defecate in it's water and food.  Your keet should be able to eat it's food and drink it's water while sitting on a perch in it's cage.  It shouldn't have to go to the bottom of the cage to eat, either from the bottom or from the dishes.

Depends on what the medical problem is and whether the bird's immune system can rid it's body of the illness on it's own.  This is something you won't know, thus, my recommendation to get your bird to an avian vet ASAP.  Problem is most people wait too long and their bird dies.

Shari.

Are you trying to find an avian vet?  Not a cat/dog vet, but an exotic animal vet.  Try this website for help locating a bird vet:

www.aav.org

If this doesn't help, search the internet using the string "avian veterinarians."  There's lots of bird vets listed.  If you can't find one close, call the closest one and ask for a local reference.

Birds that "sleep" like you describe your keet is doing for the length of time you state, likely has a medical problem.  Whether your bird will get better or not I can't say because I don't see the entire picture here like you can being physically present with your bird all the time.  It depends on what is wrong with your bird, but I'd say at this point, no, he likely will not get better on it's own if it's been a week.  A day or two is different than a week.
