can you make homemade grit?

Hello Debbie and thank you for your question,

You can not however make homemade bird gravle, Also you havent mentioned what type of birds your feeding it too... parrots don't need gravle because they remove the hull from there seeds but soft billed birds such as doves and finches don't so they should have some gravle to help grind the seeds in there crop. If you are using gravle for the cage bottom you could just use black and white newspaper its cheaper and works just as well.
