Is Kiwi Sick? HELP!!!!!

Question
QUESTION: I really need help!
I had three parakeets; Sunny(a girl), Kiwi(A boy) and B-Jay(A boy)
About a month ago or so, Sunny died after 2-3 months of being fluffy and breathing hard.
And now, just yesterday, all of a sudden, Kiwi started to get really fluffy.
Only the thing is, he is eating an awful lot and he is slowly decreasing his playfulness.
What am I supposed to do?
Is it possible that he caught this from Sunny???
Plz answer me quickly, I don't want to loose Kiwi like I did with Sunny.

ANSWER: Keep him warm and bring him to an avian vet first thing Monday morning.  I certainly cannot diagnose him from what you have said; you really need a professional vet who specializes in birds to see him.

Good luck,

Cindy

QUESTION: Thank you very much for your advice.
I just have a couple more questions:
Can B-jay catch this too?
How do you suggest I take Kiwi to the Doctor?(in what?)
And there is another problem.
I live in a city where there are no Vets around except for one and I haven't really looked into it to see if they treat birds.
If they don't do you think Kiwi will be okay if we drive in the car for about an HOUR?
And, is there any way that I can treat him at home? Do you think that and Anti Biotic would work??

Answer
Virginia,

Without knowing what the problem is, I cannot answer whether or not this is something B-Jay can catch also.  It could be completely unrelated to Sunny's death as well.

The best way to take Kiwi to the doctor is in a shoebox that is lined with paper towels and that has holes poked into the top to allow air in.  He will sleep in the box while you make your trip.  Make sure he is not in the sun or in line with the air conditioner vent in the car.

I would definitely take him to a vet that sees birds even if you need to drive for an hour.  Taking him to a non-bird vet or trying to treat him at home could do more harm than good.

Good luck,

Cindy
