My budgies get silent when Im around

Question
I'm somewhat worried because my parakeets are very obnoxious when I'm in my room but when I come out they grow silent. I'm worried that they're horrified of me. They both puff up and barely chirp at me. I'm the only one who can catch them when they manage to escape their somewhat large cage. Is this normal? My grandfather often gets loud energetic greetings in the mornings, we all get greeted if we go away for a little while ( like to go shopping). Should I be worrying or is it good that they puff up and get quiet ( It really worries me because I genuinely like them) ?

Answer
Hello, you failed to mention when you boguht the birds...how offen they see you and if you handle them at all? If there newly intrduced being scared of people is ok if they've been with you for years and are acting like this it seems a bit odd. Also do you ever yell at the birds for chirping loudly? or yell around them at all...this can be a reason they go quite when your near and its a true sign of fear and you should be sure not to yell around them or at them. Birds take to certin people for instance my 1 1/2 year old handfed male peachfaced lovebird has lived in my bedroom since he was 9 weeks old and spent his time out of cage with me on my shoulder/fingers/on the key board while I type ect ect but he will gun for my father when he sees him or chirp loudly to get his attention so he will come over to see him and take him out...he loves my father and sometimes i think more then me! They pick a favorite person this can be a reason they give a happy chipr for your grandfather...it can be simply because they like the approch of him...if he walks over says hi in a nice voice clicks his tounge or whisles at them ect ect. It can be you give off a slight not so nice vibe....if you wear bulky clothing...have bright make-up or flashy hair.... or you use a different tone around them this all goes into play. Don't take it too persoanly as it can go either way...for inscatance your grandfather could have a lovely handfed cockatiel or other bird that he Loves but only likes you...its normal really...also if you clip there wings lightly not so much so they flop t the floor when they ump off the cage or anything just enough so they glide but cant fly upwards and can be tamed if you want loving birds you'll need to tame them and its best dione when tehre young as its rather hard once there set in there ways.
