Question
i have four cockatiels and two kakarikis in an outside aviary, the female kakariki has laid a couple of eggs in the nesting box but the two male cockatiels are sitting on the eggs, is this unusual? One of the male cockatiels actually mated with the female kakariki is it possible that they have produced these eggs together? one more question- how long is it before you can see the red embryo from each egg laid ?

Answer
Hello Matthew and thank you for your post.
I am sorry that it took so long for me to answer you, but I had computer problems that are hopefully resolved now.
It is possible that the two breeds will produce fertile eggs (but crossing the breeds like this is unfavorable).
Male Cockatiels will share the responsibility of sitting on the eggs.
When the eggs are about 10 days old, they can be candled to see if there is anything inside or if it is unfertile.  Candling can be done by holding the egg up to a flashlight.  If you see tiny red lines in the egg, then it is probably fertile.  If it is, it will take about 28 days to hatch.

Good luck and God Bless.
