finch or canary?

Question
Hello!

I read in your profile that you know about zebra finches, and was wondering if you know much about canaries?

If you do, could you please tell me: which bird would be more appropriate for me? I'm 12, and I want a low-medium maintainence bird that can be kept alone or in a pair.

I have one bird cage. It is 54 cms(21 inch) wide, 66cms(26 inch)long and 52 cms(20 inch) high. Which species is better siuted to this?

Also, which species is LESS prone to disease/ilness? Which is more active?

Sorry, I'm asking a lot of questions! Thankyou, and bye!

Answer
Hello

For a pet I am not sure what you are looking for but you havn't said anything about wanting to be able to handle the birds, if you want a pet you can handle then finches or canarys arent for you beuase you cant tame them therefore you cant handle them. If you looking for a bird that will jump around its cage and sing then canarys or finches are great, for a singing bird a male canary is the best as they have lovly songs thou they can be expensive, they can be kept singaly or in pairs.Zebra finches also make interesting noises which sound a bit funny at times, they need to live in pairs or groups. If you are looking for a bird that becomes tame try a budgie they become very tame and some even learn to talk! Or if you get a larger cage a pair of ring neck doves will make delightfully tame pets with a nice song.
