Question
We have an outdoor aviary and have added a shed for our 24 budgies to roost in. The entrance is 18inches square with a ladder to the floor. The birds love playing and resting in it during the day but sleep outside in the main aviary either together on the perches or inside empty coconuts. Would a smaller entrance encourage them to sleep inside.   Diane Fosberry

Answer
Hello Diane and thank you for your post.
I think that the entrance is great, and so is the new shed for that matter.  Your budgies are very lucky birds to have so much room to be able to do their thing.
Give it time, perhaps they will go inside and do their sleeping and nesting.  Budgies are for the most part, "family birds", which actually means that they do stick together, if given enough room to not crowd each other.
I would not change the entrance, but give them a chance to find out all about this new addition.  Even though they play and rest on the ladder during the day, they are probably still leery about going in at night.
It will only take one curious bird to go in, and the rest will follow suit when they realize that there is no danger.

Good luck and God Bless.
