Mature Sun Conure seems to be turning green

Question
I have a Sun Conure, Natalie.  I don't have a history on her (I don't actually know the sex) as she was rescued last summer from a unkept home.  I just noticed that her feathers seem to have a grayish/green tint to them.  Mainly on her head and wings.  Is this normal?  She seems healthy and happy otherwise.  She has been grooming herself a lot more lately.

Answer
Sheila,

A young sun conure is mostly olive green in color. At around 6 months, the plumage slowly turns to a beautiful yellow-orange coloration. By the end of their first year, they have their full color. Primary flights on the sun conure should be dark blue, and the tail green with a blue tip. On the covert (outer wing)feathers you should have spots of an olive green color.

Of course each individual bird will be different, but what you are seeing is probably the first full moult this bird has gone through since it came from an unkept home where it probably was not getting the proper nutrition it needed.

Thanks for the question,

Wayne
