Hatching of parakeets

If the mother parakeet lays five eggs why do only one egg hatch?

Not every egg a bird lays hatches!  Some might not hatch because they weren't fertile to begin with, some might not hatch because of incubation problems, some might die-in-their-shell due to bacterial/viral/fungal contamination...there's lots of reasons why some eggs don't hatch.
