Question
Hi Linny, I asked you some questions last week about my tiel and have one more today.  We're in FL.  Today is BEAUTIFUL.  Nice crisp air and breezy.  I'm wondering if it's okay for my tiel to be in his cage next to an open window.  I know that he loves being outside during the summer but I just don't want him to get cold.  So how cold is cold for a tiel?  Is the wind okay?  I know he's a bird and birds live outside no matter the weather but since he's a house bird, I'd rather be safe than have a sick or cold bird.

Thanks
Sarah

Answer
Hello Sarah,
I believe that people from Florida, and us folk up here in the Northeast have different definitions for the word "crisp" in describing the weather. For me, "crisp" would be in the high 30's, lower 40's. I'm sure this is not what you are referring to. It's funny how one word can have different meanings to different people. *smiles* Anyway, a good rule of thumb, Sarah, is to go by how you feel. I think a 'tiels body temperature is in the 100 degree range. Maybe like 105. So, it's not that far off from yours. Use common sense, is all. As far as sitting in a window where there is a breeze coming in, that'd be fine. There is a difference between a breeze and a draft, though. A draft being a cold stream of air in an otherwise warm room. If the outside temperature is pretty equal to what is indoors, there is no reason why your bird can't enjoy some fresh air. A light breeze is fine, Sarah. Cockatiels are pretty hardy birds. Living in Massachusetts, my 'tiels have been acclimated to what we perceive to be normal temps. And, could probably withstand being outside in lower temperatures than say a Florida 'tiel. So, what my 'tiel could withstand as an outside temperature may be a tad cool for your bird. It's not really the temperature so much as being in a draft, or in inclement weather with no shelter. i.e. being left outside in rain with no place to shelter itself from. I would allow my bird outside in temps in the 60 range. I don't know if I'd do it for less than 60 though. That'd be pushing it. I hope you and your 'tiel enjoy your lovely weather. *smile*
