black cheeklovebird breeding

hi. i've bred peach faced lovebirds for years but recently have encountered a
black cheek lovebird very cheaply. i am aware that they are rare but am curious
as to what i can breed it with. only other black cheeks? other eye ring species? a
peach face? thanks.

Hi, Beth.  Thanks for posting!

You might want to consult with someone who breeds lovebirds more frequently than I do, but I'd say that because of the rarity/endangerment of this species of lovebird, you should only breed with other black cheeks.  With a bird like this, you'd be wise to enter into or get your bird entered into a specialized breeding program to bring this beautiful species back into the mainstream in order to propogate the species.  You'd need to check with serious lovebird breeders (true aviculturists) or zoos and the like for such a program or attempt to find another bird of the opposite sex somewhere so you could breed the pair.  I would not recommend breeding this bird with other species of lovebird due to it's rarity...you'd just be contaminating the gene pool.
