my moms cockatoo, Kiki

My mom has an umbrella cocktoo, thats has gotten copper in her system, my mom took her to the vet about six months ago and they gave her cuprimine 1cc 2xday with babyfood. my mom ran out the med. and (the vet didn't say how long to keep kiki on it) and Kiki stop eating and couldn't walk and was falling off her cage, my mom rush her to the vet and they said that her copper levels were very high and kept her a couple of days and gave my mom more cuprimine. Kiki is doing much better. my mom wants to know how long will she have to be on cuprimine and will the copper get out of kiki's system.(my mom use to let kiki outside on the fence and kiki got ahold of some rubberstuff on the gate(my mom lives and works at a storage place) and that how she thinks she got the copper in her system.) thank you for helping me out.

Hi Amber,

I am not a vet, so I cannot answer these questions. These are questions that your mom should be asking her vet. If she wants, go to another vet and get a second opinion.  She should also be discussing with her vet where/how her cockatoo might be getting such high levels of copper... is she chewing on something that might cause this? Her cage? Diet? etc....
