Question
Toni,
I have two fillies and one stud colt, they all three turned a year old in May. Do they need to be seperated?
Thanks!
Nick

Answer
Hi Nick-

Thanks for your question. Most experts agree that colts do not reach sexual maturity until around 2 although there have been exceptions. I think you are probably safe for another 6 months with him but no guarantee. In my opinion, mares should not be bred until they are at least 3 although they may be capable at about the same time as a stallion. Have you thought about gelding your colt- now would be a good time? Hope this helps. Best, Toni
