Miniature horse diet

Question
We were offered some cattle feed for the miniature horses with a variety of stuff including something to do with cotton seed hulls. I will write to you again when I find out all the ingredients but can you tell me the things they aren't supposed to eat?

Answer
The best answer I can give you about this question is that horses are simple stomach animals and not ruminents like cattle making some of the ingredients not compatible with their digestion. I would stay away from cattle feed as there are fillers to fatten them up which our minis don't need and probably the nutrient contents are geared for their energy level ect. and not that of horses. There are several good feeds for the minis and Farnum and purina just came out with a pony/miniature horse feed. I would truly recommend something like that. I am not a nutritianist and it would be a good idea to approach an equine feed company for specifics on the differences in cattle verses horse feed. I know some people do feed a livestock blend feed but I prefer to stick with something I know is specific to my species. Hope that helps a bit. Melissa
