Question
We have 2 minis - and I was wondering what is the best kind of bedding to use in the barn?  If I use straw, will they eat it? Would wood chips/shavings be better? Thank you for your help!!

Answer
Hi Diane-
Good question! I do not recommend using straw for bedding for the reason you mentioned, plus it's hard to keep clean. Shavings work but they are expensive and you tend to throw a lot of them out. I have also used the wood based pellets (such as Woody Pet) also expensive but they work well. My "favorite" is good old sawdust that you can generally get from a sawmill or there are people that will deliver- check your local newspaper or equine magazine. Much cheaper, if you have room to store it (even a pile covered with a tarp works) with much less waste as you can pick out the manure and leave the dry sawdust, only removing the wet. I get sawdust for about $25 a pickup load (plus delivery if you can't pick it up). Thanks and enjoy those minis! Best, Toni
