Question
We just bought a 8 year old min. pony today for my little girl. The seller said she might be pregnant. Now that we have her home we have been examining her well. My husband saw that her nipples were a little swollen and he squeezed out milk. He even felt a little bit of movement on a knot in her belly. She does not have a huge belly. How close does this sound to labor.

Answer
Hi Korie-
Thanks for your question. I really feel that you probably need to check with a vet. My minis have always had huge stomachs when they are pregnant. It almost sounds like you may be dealing with a case of "false pregnancy." The other possibility is that she may be early on in her pregnancy. Usually, my mares "bag up" before delivery although I believe they can have discharge during pregnancy and be swollen. My concern is that if she is late in her pregnancy and not large, she could be malnourished or have some other health issue. And, if she is early on she needs proper treatment and nutrition. Hope this helps. Good luck, Toni
