Answer
Hi Brittney-
Thanks for your question. I will be perfectly honest and tell you that I have only researched mini donkeys and mules. I have thought about it, too. I'm sure you know that the resulting mule cannot be bred (although male mules don't know it and should be gelded). I know people that have both and there's not a lot of difference in breeding or raising them. Your little boy may be a bit young yet. Just like any breeding, you need to keep in mind compatible conformation and personality- your vet could better advise you but I don't know of any reason you shouldn't go ahead. One thing I did note in my research is that jacks and mules have a different smell from horses and that there does seem to be a slightly higher percentage of foal rejections by mini mares (that doesn't smell like mine?). One site said there is a higher success rate with mares who are not maiden (have already had at least one baby). Other than that, the owners of mini-mules swear by them- they say they are smarter, eat less, more loyal, etc. Hmmmmmm.... Hope this helps. Best, Toni
