Small scaly bumps on horses legs.

Question
I'm so excited to find this website and your name.  My husband and I have just purchased two miniature horses and this is our first experience owning any type of horse.  They are approximately 3 1/2 months old.  I've noticed over the last few days that they seems to have small bumps under the hair on their skin that are scaly.  When scratched the bump might come off and appears a little scaby.  It's not bloody though.  I'm wondering if this is caused by some type of insect bites and if so what to do about it?  They seem to have more and more bumps each day, started with the female and now the male has them also.

Answer
Congrats on the newbys! I would say coming from a vet hospital background a vet is your best at diagnosing but here is my take on what I would do if it were me. It could be a number of skin issues fly bites, lice, fungus ect. So what I would do would be to cover all my basis first. So I would start out with providine iodine shampoos at least twice in a week after the first time I would buy a lice either powder or there is a great liquid you just pour on from poll down back. I would then after a few days get a spray on fungicide and do a couple of treatments of that too. Just do a day or so apart. If they get sores from the scaby parts treat with a triple antibiotic ointment. The other thing I worry about is ringworm. So if the top portion of treatmenst don't help and you have fly sprayed well daily to make sure that isn't the cause then it is time to call a vet for skin scrapings. I am so sorry not to have answered sooner I have been away at horse show! Good luck let me know how it goes. Melissa
